The Chalk Garden by Enid Bagnold (1984): Olivia

The Chalk Garden by Enid Bagnold

2 Men, 7 Women

Author of: The Happy Foreigner (Novel), National Velvet (Novel)

At an English Manor House in the seaside village of Sussex in the spring of 1953, a parade of candidates appears for the job of governess to 16-year-old Laurel, whose wealthy grandmother, Mrs. St. Maugham, has decided she needs a firmer hand to guide her into adulthood. The soil outside the home is lime and chalk. Every attempt at growing living things fails in the weed-choked dirt, and Bagnold makes no secret of the analogy between the moribund "chalk garden" and the stately, deadly dull life inside the manor.

The 1955 hit play was made into a movie in 1964 starring Deborah Kerr, along with Hayley and John Mills.
