The Crucible by Arthur Miller (1984): Ann Putnam

The Crucible by Arthur Miller

10 Men, 10 Women

Author of: After the Fall, All My Sons, The American Clock, The Archbishop's Ceiling, The Creation of the World and Other Business, Death of a Salesman, Eulogy for a Lady, An Enemy of the People, The Golden Years, Incident at Vichy, The Last Yankee, The Man who had All the Luck, A Memory of Two Mondays, The Price, Some Kind of Love Story, A View from the Bridge.

The story tells how small lies - children's lies - build and build until a whole town is aroused and 19 men and women go to the gallows for being possessed of the Devil... They are good men and women, upright, hardworking, compassionate and God fearing...

The story focuses upon a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant girl who maliciously causes the wife's arrest for witchcraft. The farmer brings the girl to court to admit the lie.

The trial depicts the monstrous course of bigotry and deceit. The farmer, instead of saving his wife, finds himself also accused, imprisoned, and condemned.
