Rumors by Neil Simon (March 2003) Review

Rumors by Neil Simon

5 men, 4 women

Author of: (among others) The Good Doctor, I Ought to be in Pictures, The Dinner Party, Proposals, 45 Seconds From Broadway.

What's supposed to be a 10th anniversary celebration for Charley and Myra rapidly declines into an evening of disaster and deceit when the guests arrive only to discover Myra missing and Charley ripe from an apparent suicide attempt.

First on the scene are Chris and Ken, who immediately fear the political consequences if their well-connected friend's condition is made public. So as the other guests arrive, they race to cover-up the incident. Through the course of the evening, the secret inevitably slips out to the other couples: The Ganzs, The Cusacks, and The Coopers. Rumors run rampant as they try to piece together the sordid events of the evening.

Did Charley discover Myra had been having an affair? Did Myra discover Charley had been fooling around?

When the police arrive on the scene, nothing but an all-out improvisation can possibly create an illusion of normalcy for an hilarious evening that's put everyone through the ringer.

Neil Simon's 1988 farce was a departure from his typical, autobiographical comedies.
